Transitioned to Telehealth for Continuity of Care
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it profoundly changed the way I connected with my clients. Suddenly, the in-person sessions that fostered a sense of safety and intimacy had to be transitioned to telehealth—a shift that brought its own set of challenges. Many of my clients, particularly those from marginalized communities, faced barriers like limited access to technology, unstable internet connections, and a lack of private spaces for therapy at home.
To adapt, I began by working collaboratively with clients to address these barriers. For those with limited technology, we used phone sessions instead of video. I also adjusted session times to accommodate clients' caregiving or work-from-home schedules. Recognizing the heightened stressors of the pandemic, I incorporated more mindfulness-based interventions to help clients manage anxiety, grief, and uncertainty.
Ensuring continuity of care also meant being creative with therapeutic techniques. For example, I sent grounding exercises and journaling prompts via email or text to supplement sessions. For clients unable to find a private space, we developed strategies like using headphones and speaking softly or even scheduling sessions during walks or car rides.
Above all, I recognized the importance of flexibility and compassion during such an unprecedented time. The pandemic underscored the need to center my clients' immediate realities while continuing to foster a therapeutic relationship that could hold their evolving experiences. These adjustments deepened my belief in the resilience of both my clients and the therapeutic process, even under the most challenging circumstances.
Adapted to Virtual Therapy for Flexibility
During the COVID-19 pandemic, our practice faced a challenge that required us to rethink our entire therapeutic approach. Prior to the pandemic, we were strongly against providing virtual care, especially for children and teens, believing that in-person connection was essential for effective therapy with younger clients. However, when everything shut down, we had no choice but to adapt quickly to ensure continuity of care for our clients.
To my surprise, transitioning to virtual therapy proved to be a vital tool. While our preference remains in-person treatment, particularly with children and teens, the flexibility of virtual options has become an essential component of our practice. This adaptability has allowed us to reduce cancellations significantly, whether due to weather, childcare issues, or last-minute work commitments. For example, adults working late in the city can still make their evening appointments by switching to a virtual session.
The ability to seamlessly shift between in-person and virtual care has enhanced access to quality mental health services for our clients. It has also demonstrated the importance of meeting clients where they are-literally and figuratively. I can now admit that I was wrong when I said we would "never go virtual." This change not only ensured we could support our clients during the pandemic but continues to offer invaluable flexibility for both clients and our practice today.
Implemented Telehealth for Seamless Patient Care
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we faced an unprecedented challenge in maintaining continuity of care while adhering to strict health and safety regulations. Many of our patients relied heavily on in-person treatments, and the shift to remote services required immediate adaptation. Drawing on my 30 years of experience and understanding of patient needs, I spearheaded the implementation of telehealth services at The Alignment Studio. This included creating customized virtual physical therapy sessions, providing patients with detailed exercise programs tailored to their conditions, and leveraging digital tools to monitor progress. For example, one of our long-term patients, a young athlete recovering from ACL surgery, was able to transition seamlessly to virtual rehabilitation. By guiding her through video consultations, we not only ensured she stayed on track with her recovery but also helped her regain full mobility ahead of schedule. To support patients with limited equipment at home, we developed creative solutions using common household items and provided education on maintaining ergonomic setups for work and daily activities. The pandemic also highlighted the importance of mental health in recovery, so I incorporated mindfulness techniques and stress management advice into many of my sessions. This holistic approach not only kept our patients engaged but reinforced our philosophy of treating the person, not just the injury. Thanks to the adaptability of our team and the integrated model we've built, we were able to maintain high-quality care during a time of immense uncertainty, cementing trust with our patients and strengthening the community we serve.
